Vulcanus is the Transneptunian (TNP) that relates to force. By "force", we mean an internal compulsion, rather then something that comes from the outside. It relates to that “have to” feeling that comes over us for no apparent reason. Vulcanus is just that, it is force. This can come in the form of charisma or magnetism, but it can also come as an inspiration to just do something and you may not know why or where the compulsion is coming from.

Vulcanus is associated with strength and the development of strength. Athletes will generally have strong placements or aspects to Vulcanus. Recently, upon looking at several charts, it came to my attention that people who make a career out of a physical activity, whether it is the martial arts or something like Yoga, they all have Vulcanus placed around the mid-heaven or in the tenth house, as though the concept of strength was a part of their destiny.

Vulcanus near an angle of a chart can add to the feeling of “have to” when it comes to getting things done. This will be true whether it is a transiting chart, such as a Lunar or Solar Return, or if it shows up in the Natal chart. There is a real force behind Vulcanus, even if it is not a tangible thing. When an athlete decides to take on a sport or physical art form, there is a strong sense of discipline and drive. This drive and discipline can be associated with a need or compulsion; this is the energy of Vulcanus. The same is also true when someone charms you to do something, often it is a person who has a strong Vulcanus who is able to use their charisma or their magnetism to get that compulsion going.

When you look at the placement of Vulcanus and then how it is aspected in the chart you can see what area of your life you will have that compulsion or drive, and you can also see how it is applied through the aspects. You can then determine how this energy is used by you in your everyday life. As I explained, the martial arts practicioners who have Vulcanus around the mid-heaven in the tenth house, will also find that it affects how he appears to the world as well as controlling his destiny. It is also his social standing in the community that is affected, as he is known in his world for what he does with his physical strength, and no doubt he is working with others who are also athletic and strong.

Vulcanus travels very slowly which means that transiting aspects are kept within small orbs or within a degree. Vulcanus will show you what areas of your life where you are driven to compulsion, where there will be many feelings of “I have to do this.” How it is aspected shows how well you do or don’t do with this compulsive energy. How well do you deal with strength, in yourself or in others?
